National Council for Higher Education (NCHE)

Your Advocate For Higher Education

Your Advocate For Higher Education.

Welcome to the National Council for Higher Education's (NCHE) web site. NCHE is an independent membership organization for all higher education members of the National Education Association who join.

NCHE held its Regular Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, March 14-15, 2019.  Despite a “bomb cyclone” wreaking havoc on NCHE members’ travel and the meeting agenda, diehard NCHE members participated in the important business of the Council.

The following occurred during the meeting:

1. Re-election of the following NCHE leaders:

  • President --  DeWayne Sheaffer
  • Vice President -- Alec Thomson
  • Membership Chair -- Phillipe Abraham
  • At-Large Member – Andy Sako

2. Endorsement of the following NEA Candidates for Executive Committee:

  • Ruben Murillo
  • Robert Rodriguez

3. Updating and amending of the following NCHE governing documents, which will be posted in final form in the near future:

  • Constitution
  • Bylaws
  • Standing Rules
  • Policies and Procedures (updated by the Executive Committee, according to the required process, prior to the Regular Annual Meeting)

4. Awarded the following, though both recipients’ trips were cancelled due to the weather, so please attend the Summer Meeting to help honor these amazing educators:

  • NCHE Davenport Award:  Catherine Leisek, Broward College, Florida
  • NEA/NCHE Higher Educator of the Year Award:  David Schneider, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan

NCHE’s summer meeting always has a packed agenda, but this year it will include reports that had to be cancelled at the Regular Annual Meeting due to the weather problems.  Be sure to attend to get the latest from NCHE leaders and key NEA departments working on higher education issues.

NCHE’s next meeting will be held in conjunction with the NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly, as follows:

NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly Dates

  • NCHE Meeting:  July 3, 2019, 2:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Caucus meetings:  meetings will be held on RA days during lunch breaks of 45 minutes or longer
  • RA dates:  July 4-7, 2019

NEA Foundation Supports NCHE and NEA Higher Educators

The NEA Foundation provides critical support to higher education.  For example:

  • NCHE recently created an annual Higher Educator of the Year Award.  To NCHE’s surprise and jubilation, the  NEA Foundation is supporting this effort with a monetary award of $10,000 for the winner, equal to that of its support for the annual NEA ESP Award.
  • The Foundation awards grants three times each year to NEA members to support both classroom innovation and professional development – and in each round, some of those grantees are higher education members.  In the very competitive fall 2018 round, the Foundation awarded support for a team featuring faculty and staff from a higher education institution.
o Read more about it here.
o To participate in the next round, follow these links to the application and guidelines for the Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership grants. There are three deadlines per year: February 1, June 1, and October 1.

GPS Fund Grants

NEA’s Great Public Schools (GPS) Fund enables grant awardees to improve student success. Since 2013, the GPS Fund has provided funds to state affiliates, local affiliates, and partnerships that demonstrate leadership in enhancing the quality of public education and engaging members. Award criteria focus on ensuring successful students, accomplished professionals, dynamic collaboration, and empowering leaders. Go here to learn more about the grants already awarded, about guidelines and deadlines, and about the application process.

edCommunities, NEA’s online professional learning and engagement community, hosts many private and public discussion groups.
