Tennessee Principal, Assistant Principal Shot

By Cynthia McCabe

February 12, 2010 -- A Knoxville, Tennessee, elementary school principal and assistant principal are hospitalized with gunshot wounds after an employee allegedly shot them at school Wednesday. Principal Elisa Luna was in critical condition and Assistant Principal Amy Brace was in stable condition, according to local news reports.

Last year, the Tennessee Education Association named Luna its Distinguished Educator Award recipient.

Tennessee’s teachers’ thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragedy," said TEA President Earl Wiman. "We would like to extend our support to all of those touched by this incident."

Both Luna and Brace were active members of the Association.

Police on Wednesday arrested teacher Mark Stephen Foster in connection with the shooting. They allege that he was told by the administrators shortly before the shooting that his contract would not be renewed next year. Most of the school's 400 students were gone for the day when the shooting occured.

"No one wants to think about a school shooting," Knox County Education Association President Jessica Holman told The Knoxville News Sentinel. "I'm particularly bothered that it was a staff member that did the shooting."
