Journey to a Black Hole starts with students locating a black hole. They use a viewfinder to scan the night sky for black holes using visible light as well as x-rays and radio waves. They can choose to visit a stellar mass black hole in the Milky Way galaxy or a supermassive black hole at the center of the Andromeda galaxy 30 million times more massive than our Sun. Students adjust speed along the way and decide how close they want to get to the black holes.

Black Hole Encyclopedia presents content under two discipline headings, physics and astronomy. Physics covers the nature of black holes and includes three virtual experiments. In the third physics experiment, What Happens When I Fall Into A Black Hole?, students will see light from distant stars get bent by a black hole's gravity and, as they fall in, their bodies stretched and torn completely apart before they are squashed into a single point of infinite density at the central singularity. Find The Mass Of A Black Hole lets students adjust a black hole’s mass or orbit size to observe changes in a companion star’s orbit and explains how astronomers measure the speed of a companion star’s orbit to determine a black hole’s mass.
