The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center has approximately 200,000 maps and 5,000 atlases. Many of the resources are have been digitized and are available online.

View Collection lets users search the online collection by keyword and explore it by location, subject, date, publisher, author, or projection. Collection highlights include some of the earliest printed maps, maps of the American Revolutionary era, early nautical charts, maps from the age of discovery, engraved and colored maps and atlases from the 16th to 18th Centuries, and more.

Teacher Resources

Teacher Resources include K-12 lesson plans & curriculum units, map activities, and professional development.

  • Lesson Plans can be searched by grade level, topic, location, and time. Lessons are available as PDFs. A search for elementary lessons on the Middle East provided two current events lessons. In one of those lessons, Learn about Iraq, students locate major cities, ports, and regions of the country. They also locate important geographical features. A search for lessons about Africa for high school students returned five hits. In one lesson, Political, Ethnic and Tribal African Maps 1800-Present, students compare political maps and maps providing information about language, ethnic background, or tribes.
  • Curriculum Units have full sets of lesson plans for specific grade levels. Units available include the American Civil War and Math and Maps.
  • Map Activities fall under four headings: Explore Boston’s Past, Can You Map This, Navigate Boston Today, and Outside The Classroom. Each category has 4-6 downloadable activities.
  • Professional Development lists free workshops.

Maps in the News provides maps to support the news. Current maps feature China, New Orleans, Bolivia, Darfur, and Iraq.

Virtual Tours are multimedia explorations of maps, themes, and concepts. Tour the American Civil War, New England, immigration, and cartography.
