KQED Art School

KQED Art School is video series with demonstrations of art techniques and concepts for K-12 students and teachers as well as interviews with contemporary performing, visual and media artists. Some videos appear under more than one heading.

  • Visual Arts is organized like a blog by date and must be browsed. A sub-series of videos introduces to K-5 students the elements of art: line, shape, form, texture, space, value, and color. Value and color will presumably follow. Line (3:26) presents line as used in self-portraits by Faith Ringgold, Escher, Picasso, Van Gogh, Frieda Kahlo, Basquiat and more and demonstrates how artists use line to express their style and message. The most recent addition to the elements is Space. (4:54) The video examines how artists use ((3D) and create the illusion of (2D) space and explains the difference between positive and negative space. The video features works by Christo, Henry Moore, Ben Shahn, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ruth Asawa, and others. Other videos examine graphic novels, collaborative art, printmaking, App art, animation, scientific sculpture, and other forms for students in grades K-12.
  • Performing Arts videos provide a look at music, multimedia performance, opera, and hip-hop. The Five Elements of Dance (4:15) address the elements of body, action, space, time, and energy common to all forms of dance and creative movement. In The Art of the Skratch: DJs Celskiii + Deeandroid, (5:28) Celskiii and Deeandroid demonstrate four basic skratches.
  • Media/Digital features digital technology’s influence on art. In App Art with Franky Aguilar, (5:44) Aguilar describes his background in art and how he came to develop mobile art Apps like CatWang, Snoopify, Ima Unicorn, and GifYogurt, which let students create collages using photos and digital stickers.
  • Artists A-Z lists featured artists and their fields and links to videos.
