Extra History

Extra History is a YouTube channel that features videos on events and figures in ancient and world history of approximately 1-25 minutes. Videos feature maps, animation, images of contemporary art, and some humor. Often, a final video critiques the series, acknowledging errors and oversights, making clarifications, and adding interesting footnotes. Currently, 191 videos span Ancient Rome to the Berlin Airlift. New episodes appear every Saturday.

Rome: The Punic Wars is a series of four videos (total approximately 45:00) that provide an overview of the first two wars between Rome and Carthage (264-241 BC and 214-148 BC). The first Punic War was for the most part a naval war. The second featured Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps and Scipio’s defeat of a larger Carthaginian force in Spain.

Africa: Zulu Empire is a series of five videos (total approx. 46:00) that opens when Shaka Zulu becomes king, examines the discovery of diamonds, and concludes with England’s expansion in the territory. The final video critiques the preceding four.

Europe: The First Crusade is told in six episodes (approx. 1 hour) and a final critique. this Pope Urban II called for the first crusade in 1095 to aid the Byzantine Empire and lasted four years. The critique includes a discussion of what constitutes historical accuracy.

Suleiman the Magnificent (1494 -1566) was the longest-reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire. His story is told in six episodes (approx. 1 hour) and a final critique.

The History of Writing is one episode (7:08) that relates the development of written language in the temples of Ancient Sumer.
