Center for Middle Eastern Studies  offers cross-curricular lessons for K-12+ in general Middle Eastern studies as well as lessons for 14 specific countries. Lessons can be filtered by grade level, content area, and subject or country. Some lessons list various state standards.

Algerian Folk Tales and Grimm's Fairy Tales  ( PDF, 340 KB, 5 pgs.) (K-5) Students listen to or read the Algerian “How The Animals Kept The Lions Away” and the German “The Bremen Town Musicians” and compare the animals and their roles. The Algerian tale is included, as is a comparison grid. A link to the Grimm brother’s tale is provided.

The House of Wisdom and Folio Creation ( PDF, 2.3 MB, 33 pgs.) (Grade 6) In a series of lessons, students explore The House of Wisdom, the center of knowledge in the Medieval Islamic world and aspects of history, science, math, art, and music. The unit includes links to materials and resources. NY state standards are listed.

Compare and Contrast the Empires: Rome, China, and the Ottoman Empire ( PDF, 157 KB, 5 pgs.) (Grade 10-12) In groups, students research the great empires and make group presentations that include information, maps, pictures, artifacts, audio materials like music, and short video pieces.
