The Food Timeline

The Food Timeline  presents food history and recipes from around the world and spanning 19 thousand years. The website can be used to supplement K-12 social studies, health, and language arts (food advertising) classes. The timeline (17.000 BC to the present) links to reference text suitable for students in grades 6-12 and for teachers of K-5. The left side links to raw ingredients, the right side to prepared dishes. All quotations include source citations for further investigation.

The Food Timeline Index  provides alphabetical access to entries as well as categorized entries under the headings: food, foodservice, Old World, New World, and teacher tools.

Food History Lesson Plans  can be browsed under headings: history, diversity, economics, food ads & packaging, and food as art. Dishes include furmenty white worts, tripe of turbot, eels in gauncelye, and garbage.

Five-Hundred-Year-Old Food Makes Me Sick  (K-5) Students imagine foods relished by royalty was from their names (not what they really were) and write a poem about one or its imagined (the sillier the better) recipe. Other activities are suggested.

The Home Front - "Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do Or Do Without!" (6-12) Students investigate why and how the US government conducted advertising campaigns to urge Americans to grow their own food, ration necessities, and recycle resources during World War II. The lesson includes suggested activities for younger students. Links to resources.
